Ten Shades & Me

Living a Christian life before the Bible.

Fortunately, the tension between Master Levi and me didn’t last long and, by lunchtime Monday, we’re back to our old selves once more. The tension between Master and Riley lives on still, but that’s coming from Riley’s side, not his. Master did try to extend an olive branch by way of a typical British diplomacy — a cup of tea — and Riley took it, then battened down the hatches again. Master knows he can’t keep trying if Riley doesn’t want to engage, especially not after she called him “creepy”.

For what it’s worth, both his manager and his colleagues seem to be taking Master’s side in this, rather than Riley’s. One even likened calling him a creep to calling him a peadophile: “you just don’t say it.”

So the support he has at work and at home has helped Master to see that this is a “Riley” problem, not a “him” problem, and he has began to relax. Quietly, though, I’m hoping this helps Master to understand that not every friendly human is a friend. Some are, but others only use their perceived friendliness to gain something from you, and I, sadly, am all too aware of the fact.

Monday evening, Valkyries and I sort of did the old photo swap thing. I understand Valkyries likes to stay out of the public eye in this lifestyle, and I do too, albeit for a different reason to him.

Because of the nature of my work, I don’t share selfies on my blog so I can live my personal life without fear of being recognised while I’m out and about. Hence, my old masquerade mask photo.

Valkyries suggests we do macaroni pictures. One problem with that: I don’t have any macaroni.

So we found a new way: with cartoonised photos of ourselves. Shadow is very generous in giving me wide, blue doe eyes, but I think it makes my jaw rounder than it really is. Well, here’s me!

Illustrated portrait of Elena, the author of Ten Shades & Me, smiling with bright blue eyes and dark brown hair in a soft updo, wearing a black lace top and beaded earrings against a neutral, studio-style gradient background.

Valkyries says that my cartoonised photo reminds him of the “French girls” scene from Titanic and I blush: nobody has made me feel that beautiful in quite some time.

Valkyries’ picture looks quite rugged, and he did joke that he looked like he belonged on a fishing trawler. Be that as it may, there’s one thing about fisher folk: they are typically very good with knots.

We had spent some time earlier in the day talking about the “shires” — the places we grew up. I introduced Valkyries to some of my favourite landscapes, and it’s good, but it’s not enough. Looking at photos of life along the River Avon is one thing, but the best thing is being there.

Then there’s the other things I want to share with him, like my favourite view (especially at night, watching the ships coming into the docks), and the park with the view over to Wales on a sunny day.

We aren’t just talking about kink anymore, though, we’re talking about life.

Early Tuesday morning I wound up having it out with ChatGPT – about the Bible, of all things. Readers will know that I recently returned to faith, with the help and support of Valkyries, but I’m just… not getting on with the Bible. It’s interesting, but I don’t really have the time to sit down and read something I’m only vaguely interested in when I could be, you know, doing.

So this is the way I was raised: my grandmother used to say “why go to God’s house (church) when you can be out, doing God’s work?”. I think my mindset is kind of an extension of that: why spend time reading verses and parables of God when I can take his spirit out into the world and help people like God wants me to?

Something that I take great interest in is the idea of “The Way” — how Christians lived before the Bible, as disciples of Jesus Christ. There was no literature to study, only a way of living, with kindness, patience, love and hospitality. That’s a way I aim to live every day.

Riley’s silence didn’t last forever, and by Tuesday evening, she and Master are on talking terms again. I’m frustrated by it, but mostly I’m frustrated because, as mentioned, I spent Friday advising him, Saturday negotiating with him, and by Tuesday, all is well again. It impacted my work, and it set me behind. Hence, I‘m frustrated.

Master has assured me that he’s keeping her at arm’s length now, but I’m not sold. I’m afraid it’s going to take me a little longer before she comes back off of my watch list, if indeed she does.

Until next time!
